Shas leader MK Aryeh Deri spoke with Israel Radio on Thursday morning 18 Menachem Av 5773, the day after the election for new chief rabbis.
Israel Radio:
In the view of those pleased with the outcome of the election, Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita is credited with the victory. However, we all know that if the effort failed, the rabbi would not be blamed but that would have fallen on your shoulders alone.
Deri:
Let me share something with you. My letter of resignation was already written and I have it in my pocket. Had this occurred, I would have submitted it today. Baruch Hashem this is not the case and we did not need the letter.
Regarding taking the blame, it should be clear to all. Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita runs Shas — he alone, no one else. This is the way things have been and will remain in the future.
As far as Rav Lau goes, I know him for 20 years and he is without a doubt suited for the post. Rav Yitzchak Yosef is a profound talmid chacham and I am confident they will work together to the betterment of Am Yisrael.

Please, Aryeh – submit the letter anyway. There will be many who support your doing so – and the sooner, the better.

If these 2 Rabbis don’t unite the Jewish people, I suspect that this will be the last Chief Rabbinate Race. People have tasted the Etz Hadaat in this past election and are sick to their stomachs.

Deri cares about what’s best for Am Yisroel? There is a bridge for sale in Brooklyn. He would sell the Country down the river for more funding and graft opportunities.
It has been reported that he is willing to enter a left-wing government with Meretz and the Arabs. That shows how much he cares. He also supported Oslo, which led to many Jewish deaths and displacements.
Deri’s a politician but he is certainly far better than the Bayit HaYehudi and their daati cabal.
