With less than a week to the elections for new Chief Rabbis of Israel, there is an air of cautious optimism in the Rav Stav camp. The rav is running for the post of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi.
This is despite the recent gains by Rabbi David Lau, who enjoys the backing of HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita.
In addition, HaGaon HaRav Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg Shlita released a letter on Thursday morning, 11 Menachem Av 5773 instructing followers not to vote for Rav Stav.
In essence, most view the race between these two candidates, and the results are likely to be close.
Rav Stav, who stands at the helm of the Tzohar Rabbonim organization, over recent weeks has minimized his appearance in the media, concentrating on meetings with members of the voting body, the 150 people who will select the chief rabbis.
The Letter:
“הנני בזה לעורר מה ששמעתי מרננים, אף שקשה להאמין שזה נכון שיתכן שתצביעו בבחירות לרבנות הראשית עבור הרב סתיו.
וכידוע שלא טוב השמועה אשר שומעים מעם ד’ וח”ו שלא יצא מזה חילול השם ועלול להכשיל הרבים ובפרט שבזמן האחרון יש פעילות גדולה מכת הרפורמים להיכנס בארץ ישראל וזה עלול מאד לקרות בבחירת רב שאינו לוחם נגדם”.
The rav emphasizes:
“בודאי שאין בין אנשי שלומינו חשודים על זה אבל מתוך חוסר ידיעה עלולים להיכשל”.
