Education Committee Cancels Nahari (Chareidi Mosdos Funding) Law

ponThe Knesset Education Committee on erev Tisha B’Av 5773 voted to eliminate the Nahari Law, a law that compelled government funding for chareidi mosdos. The law compelled funding to ‘recognized’ mosdos that are not officially part of the state education system. The bill will be eliminated in the Arrangements Law.

Committee Chairman MK (The Movement) Amram Mitzne stated the elimination of the Nahari Law is a first step among many towards strengthening the state’s education system. In line with the new reality, a local government may opt to assist chareidi mosdos or not, but it will no longer be compelled to do so.

However, even when this becomes reality, the situation for the 5774 school year will still compel funding no less than 70% of the amount received by a school in 5773. Therefore the real weight of the elimination of the law will only be felt in 5775. This is to ensure an orderly transition regarding a school’s funding, providing the coming school year for a school’s administration to prepare for the following year.

  1. Given he policy of the zionist’s government is to surpress the hareidi community, it does seem logical to cut off funding. Don’t be shocked if they try to “tax” money raised abroad for non-zionist schools, followed by compulsory education (requiring all students to spend most of the school in government schools, with Torah restricted to after hours schools).
