At approximately 03:04 am the Town of Ramapo Police Dept. received a report of a structure fire on Saddle River Rd. across from 190 Saddle River Rd. in the Village of Chestnut Ridge. The fire was called in by a driver on the New York State Thruway which runs just north of the structure. Town of Ramapo Police officers arrived and confirmed that the building was fully involved in flames and was known to have been abandoned. The Mosey Volunteer F.D. responded and began to extinguish the fire and attempt to confirm that the residence was in fact abandoned.
Assisting the Monsey F.D. with the fire were the South Spring Valley, and Hillcrest Volunteer Fire Departments, along with Rockland Paramedics and the Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corp. The Rockland County Sheriffs’ Arson Investigators and Ramapo Police Detectives were requested due to the suspicious nature and origin of the fire. The nature and origin of the fire is still to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.
One Monsey F.D. member was injured while fighting the fire. He suffered what appeared to be heat exhaustion or a similar heat related injury and was treated at the scene by Rockland Paramedics and transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Ramapo Valley Ambulance.
