Jerusalem to Crack Down on Restaurants Opening Tisha B’Av


mishtJerusalem police have completed preparations for Tisha B’Av, including enforcement of the law prohibiting stores in the capital from opening during the mourning day.

Officials in the Operations Branch explains hundreds of police and border police will take up position in the Old City as tens and tens of thousands are expected to visit the Kosel during the fast day. Officials are aware of the special challenge as this year as Tisha B’Av and Ramadan coincide, so there will be a large number of Muslims making their way to Har Habayis. This will be especially evident during the later afternoon of 9 Av. Many mispallalim usually arrive at the Kosel on motzei Tisha B’Av for Kiddush Levana as well.

Police will also be monitoring compliance with the law that prohibits opening restaurants on Monday night and Tuesday.

On Tisha B’Av, non-residents in vehicles will not be permitted entry into the Old City with the exception of those drivers with a special permit. Egged will be picking up the pace and providing many more buses to and from the Kosel. A large police presence is promised on routes leading to the Old City and Kosel.
