Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Yosef Shlita met with 86 IDF Rabbinate cadets who completed the IDF Chief Rabbinate’s course to become military rabbonim.
Rav Yosef participated in the graduation ceremony for the military rabbonim at Jerusalem’s Ammunition Hill, giving his bracha to the graduates. “Your job is important, and one must not be too machmir. In your home, do as you wish, but in the public sphere, go with halacha. On the other side, one does not need too be to lenient”, stated the rav, adding, cabinet ministers have spoken with me on numerous occasions about the need for leniency, and there was none like Maran who aimed for the ‘koach of the heter’. [However], one may not just invent a heter”.
The rav added that any chance they have to learn, they must take advantage and learn Torah. “Torah protects you, and we need protection from all of the attacks. Utilize the time to learn Torah so you will be able to permit that which is permitted and prohibit that which is prohibited”.

What was the surprise, that he said “one must not be too machmir” or that he said “one does not need too be to lenient”?
