Just after the end of the fast of Tisha B’av in Israel, it was announced that emergency medical services form Magen David Adom and United Hatzalah responded to 224 emergencies over the course of the day that were caused by the fast.
Sunday was a relatively hot day in Israel an the majority of the cases treated over the course of the day involved weakness, fainting, dehydration, and confusion.
Magen David Adom said that they responded to 147 emergencies involving weakness and dizzyness, 8 emergencies where people suffered from dehydration and 69 cases where people fainted. Not all of the people were taken to the hospital as many sufficed with the care given at the scene.
Director of MDA Eli Bin said: “Each year Maen David Adom staff provide a fast and professional emergency medical response and treatment to those injured or taken il over the course of Tisha B’av. I am very thankful that we did not have any cases out of the ordinary, something that points to those who were fasting paying heed to the instructions issued by Magen David Adom prior to the fast about how to fast properly.”
