NYC Rent Guidelines Board Eyes Increases

hi rise1.jpgNew York City’s rent-stabilized apartment dwellers may soon have to pay higher rents, but landlords say the proposed rent increases are not high enough.

Rent board officials met Monday evening for a key vote in this year’s battle over raising fees in rent-regulated apartments. The Rent Guidelines Board voted to increase one-year leases by between 3.5 to 7 percent. Two-year leases will be increased between 5.5 to 9.5 percent.

Final amounts for increases will be determined by a final vote, which will be held June 19 after a series of public meetings – and all increases would go into effect in October.

Last week, building owners asked for at least a 10-to-15-percent raise on one-year leases and an even higher raise on two-year leases. They say maintenance costs for services like water and fuel have gone up dramatically.
