Israel’s High Court of Justice on Monday evening rejected a petition filed by Tiveria Mayor Ron Kobi against Minister of the Interior Aryeh Deri and the director-general of his office.
The court petition followed the decision by Deri to provide Kobi with an extension, until September 30, 2019, to pass a city budget, which he has failed to do in five attempts to date.
In line with Deri’s decision, the mayor and his city council would continue operating until the deadline. This brings back the same councilmen, including the religious and chareidi ones, who have prevented his passage of a budget. Clearly, unless they have a change of heart, Kobi will not succeed in passing a budget between now and the new deadline.
In the court’s decision, the judges wrote, “In light of the developments that took place after our hearing, and after looking at the positions presented on the matter, we conclude that the petition in the format submitted exhausted itself at this time and that is to be deleted”.

This was not a loss for Kobi, it was a win. Deri had called a hearing to dismiss Kobi, and Kobi sued him; the court was openly sympathetic to Kobi, and was about to order that the city council be dismissed instead, and a “citizens’ commission” be appointed to rubber-stamp Kobi’s budget, so Deri folded and granted this extension. If the council continues not to pass the budget, then the most likely outcome is that in October they will be dismissed and he will remain.
YWN your post is very unclear is this a loss/gain/you’re not sure yourself??
Milhouse: you’re wrong it actually was a loss for Kobi. I did some reading of other news sources.. He wanted to kick out all the councilmen from the local municipality in Tiveria. This way he could bring in all his rotten friends so that he could pass a budget, but the high court ruled its not legal.
RRR, you are wrong. The judges openly said they were about to rule for Kobi, which is precisely why Deri suddenly granted this extension.
Milhouse: True that the judges are pro Kobi and that Deri gave him an extension for another few week. Ok. After this though, Kobi tried getting the court to fire all the councilmen so he could bring in new guys who will approve his budget so he will not have to have a hearing at all. That, he lost. The court did not agree BH
It was a win/loss for Kobi: He got another chance, but then he lost his second appeal to the judges.. meaning he is still not in the clear
