Russian Official: Snowden Accepts Venezuelan Asylum Offer

snoThe head of the Russian parliament’s foreign affairs committee says Edward Snowden has accepted Venezuela’s offer of political asylum.

Alexei Pushkov made the statement on his Twitter account Tuesday. The message did not clarify how he learned of Snowden’s purported acceptance, but Pushkov has acted as an unofficial point-man for the Kremlin on the Snowden affair.

Snowden, who revealed details of a U.S. intelligence program to monitor Internet activity, came to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on June 23 and was believed to be headed for Cuba. But he did not board that flight and has not been seen since. He is widely believed to be still in the airport’s transit zone.

  1. #1: I don’t think so. More likely, the US will cut off all aide to V, recall its ambassador, declare the V ambassador persona non grata, then wait and see.

If V doesn’t hand him over, then they will send a specops team in…

  2. #1 & 2 – It would be very bad politically for the US to perform any sort of military action on him when he’s outside of the U.S. Right now people see him as “taking on the establishment” and if he’s killed in a raid, shootout, etc. then he will just become a martyr of what those “big, bad Americans” will do to “anyone who dares oppose their dictatorship/Establishment/etc.” The better idea is to try to extradite him, put him through a long, boring trial where most people will lose interest, and then either jail him for life or execute him for treason.

Oh, and #1- What about the >200 innocents on that plane? Should they be shot down too?
