An Israel Air Force F16 fighter jet crashed into the sea on Sunday afternoon, 29 Tammuz 5773. The fighter jet, which took off from the Chatzeirim base in the south of the country, stalled out during training operations. After numerous attempts to restart the aircraft, the pilot and navigator ejected to safety as the plane crashed into the water off the Gaza coast.
The air force’s 669 rescue unit responded and a chopper pulled the crew from the water, transporting them in good condition to Tel Hashomer Hospital, where they were checked following the ordeal.
Air Force Commander Major-General Amir Eshel has grounded all similar planes until an investigation can determine what caused the engine to shut down mid flight.
