MK Moshe Gafne responded to the cabinet vote on Sunday, 29 Tammuz 5773, the passage of the Share the Burden Bill.
“The decision is a stain on the State of Israel which is becoming the only nation in the world which has decided learning Torah is illegitimate,” he stated.
He went on with words addressing the future. “If one things that as a result of the law there will be one person who will close his Gemara and stop learning, he is badly mistaken. We will not forgive Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu who received our unconditional support for decades, or Naftali Bennett, the head of the Bayit Yehudi party, which views itself as a dati party with a relationship with lomdei Torah.”
Gafne added that “The lomdei Torah are the defenders of the entire world, as the prophet says ‘אם לא בריתי יומם ולילה חוקות שמים וארץ לא שמתי’. The lomdei Torah are the foundation of the entire world.”

“The decision is a stain on the State of Israel which is becoming the only nation in the world….. ”
Since when is a “stain” on a shmattah called a stain?
It’s the Rabbanim who the reshaim in the government will have to deal with, not with the students. If the Rabbanim will be steadfast like the students in Ono College, the charedim have nothing to fear besiyata dishmaya.
The charedim in Ono College is a small sample what the officials in the military can expect if charedim will enter the military and their legal spiritual needs will not be fulfilled 100%. Boy will the IDF and government officials have shame in the world.
Today’s youth are from a different breed, they are not the type of “being led like sheep to the slaughter”, and if someone will step on their toes, I don’t envy them…
Before you know it, the IDF will throw the charedim out of the military before they’ll have a chance to make a complete spiritual revolution in the army … and thereby all over Israel, since that would be the antithesis for recruiting the charedim to the military.
If all Rabbanim and Roshei Yeshivot will take responsibility and their chassidim and talmidim will all send a registered letter to the IDF office “My Rabbi/Rosh Yeshiva prohibits me from joining the army or doing national service, etc, take it up with him/them,” there’s no way that any charedi will join the army or do national service.
We are anticipating the day when the government will show their true faces and lock up all the Rabbanim and Roshei Yeshivot behind bars. The askanim will have a might easy job showing the world how the Israeli government is worse than the Communists who imprisoned and exiled Rabbanim.
there’s no way that any charedi will join the army or do national service. –
EXCEPT for those talmidim who are not in Yeshiva full time and would like a structured system where they can learn an occupation, profession and be paid for serving.
Why hasn’t Prime Minister Lapid arrested MK Netanyahu for dereliction of duty? That AWOL Bibi, is at this point a worthless piece of meat!
