Shalom has already begun collecting signatures, hoping to amass enough support to compel the dissolving of the Knesset – calling for national elections this year, or at the very latest, next year.
Shalom explained the current government reached the end of its road, unable to continue with the ongoing investigations and widespread corruption, stating that even while investigations were taking place against former Prime Minister Sharon, the coalition was stable, which Shalom explained is not the case today – compelling new elections.
Shalom stressed that it is not just the police investigation, but added this is the fifth investigation against Olmert and there is a limit. In addition, the current situation is one that Olmert’s position is weakened, unstable if you will, which has a direct impact on negotiations with the PA and Syria. He also added there is a “moral red line” which Olmert has crossed.
