Con Edison was taking 30,000 customers off power in Brooklyn to make repairs and prevent a bigger outage, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in a tweet Sunday night.
The announcement comes on top of the more than 38,000 customers who lost power on the third day of an oppressive heatwave. The heat index rose above 100 degrees across the tri-state and thunderstorms thrashed parts of New Jersey.
About 33,000 Con Edison customers in southeast Brooklyn were without power. This included the neighborhoods of Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Old Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, and Georgetown.
Con Edison is asking customers in certain neighborhoods in Southeast Brooklyn to conserve energy while company crews work to repair equipment problems. Con Edison has also reduced voltage by 8 percent in those areas as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service as repairs are made.
The affected area serves approximately 132,000 customers and includes Flatbush, Prospect Park Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Canarsie, Flatlands, Old Mill Basin, Bergen Beach and Georgetown.

Con Edison has asked customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, microwaves and, if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, until the equipment problems are resolved.
The voltage reduction was also implemented in Coney Island, Seagate, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and Sheepshead Bay neighborhoods, but Con Edison is not asking customers in those areas to conserve energy.
Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com/reportoutage, or with their mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power.
Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.
The equipment problems in these neighborhoods have no effect on the rest of the Con Edison system.

if not needed for health or medical reasons, air conditioners, This means/implies that if the sole reason one requires to utilize air-conditioners is to get thru the צום without having to drink, this does not qualify, and one should not be utilizing air-conditioning.
This is not the 1950’s anymore cant they build additional power stations to handle a heat wave they happen every year!
