Just a few short weeks after being appointed to head Shas’ financially ailing Mayan Chinuch education network, Mordecai Mordechai on Wednesday, 25 Tammuz 5773 announced he is stepping down.
According to a Kikar Shabbat report, in his letter of resignation, Mordechai expressed his reasons for stepping down in a harsh tone, attacking senior officials in the education network, calling them “bad people”. He continues by telling the rabbonim shlita that he has worked in the public sector for many years, but never has he run into people as difficult to work with as those in the Mayan Chinuch organization. He explains that his decision to step down is based on the realization that he wants to preserve his good name, he must step down.
When asked to comment on the report, Mordechai preferred not to give a statement. Mordechai is a former director of the Interior Ministry as well as the Housing Ministry. He was called upon to take over the organization after former Shas leader Eli Yishai told Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita he would not be accepting the post.
