MH: A last-minute settlement between the City of Hollywood and the Hollywood Community Synagogue Chabad Lubavitch is expected to be announced this morning, bringing an end to a five-year battle between the two parties.
City commissioners voted late Friday to allow the synagogue to operate in a residential community.
A trial was expected to start at 9 a.m. this morning in the U. S. Federal Courthouse in Miami, but commissioners worked hard on Friday to hammer out an agreement to let the synagogue stay in two Hollywood Hills homes.
The synagogue must drop its 2-year-old religious discrimination lawsuit against the city and Commissioner Sal Oliveri.
The battle to drive the chabad from the neighborhood has been driven by neighbors’ complaints that the community isn’t zoned for a house of worship, which brings in traffic, noise and trash.
Immediately following the hearing before U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard, representatives from the synagogue will hold a news conference to explain the terms of the settlement.
After the news conference, Rabbi Joseph Korf with meet with the media at the Hollywood Chabad to discuss the long battle and plans for the future.
