The Tal Law was disqualified by the High Court of Justice in the summer of 2012 and since that time, the government has not succeeded in passing a new law to address the draft of bnei yeshivos. Barring the passing a new law, 3,000 chareidim who received draft notices will be inducted into the IDF in August 2013, the summer draft. Those failing to report for service will be listed as AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave) and face arrest.
While the Ministerial Peri Share the Burden Committee has approved a draft bill, that bill has still not been passed into law and the 3,000 chareidim are scheduled to be inducted in three weeks.
The Peri Committee is scheduled to convene on Tuesday, 24 Tammuz 5773 to discuss the chareidi draft bill.

Will the get anything close to 3000? Have they pre-checked those being drafted to exclude those likely to refuse? Are they prepared to arrest hundreds, or thousands, or refusers? Are they certain that those drafted with be “good soldiers” who will follow orders, and accept the psak halacha of the army rabbinate (perhaps part of the pre-checking).
If the zionists have a brain, they will concentrate on drafting those who would go peacefully, including those who would have gone anyways (e.g. hardal types, those who want to be in the army) and avoid aggravating the confrontation (don’t even try to draft, or arrest, non-zionists). Israel has never had more than a handful of draft resistors before (“evaders” yes, “resistors” no).
The stakes are also very high for the non-zionist yeshiovos, as well as for Degel ha-Torah, Agudath Israel and Shas. If most of those summoned report, it will be a clear sign that the hareidi parties have no power or influence, and they will increasingly be ignored by the zionists on all issues.
There is a saying that it is curse to be “blessed to live in interesting times” – and these will definitely be “interesting” times.
Now that over 2,000 people coming from different countries of Europe protested in front of EU institutions in Brussels (main news in Europe yesterday that YWN, like secular media, didn’t have the Jewish pride to report), the Zionists will have to deal with the EU – who understood the plight of charedim well – before they’ll be able to put their decree into action. They can schedule it from today to tomorrow but the world is siding with charedim.
They could avoid drafting (or arresting) those hareidim who do not support the medinah, i.e., those who could with a straight face say they would prefer to live in a Palestinian state rather than a zionist state (which is really the reason they exempt Arabs). They could also mminimize risk by discharging as “unsuitable” anyone who clearly will refuse to obey orders.
Or the zionists could go for a full fledged, existential, confrontation and say “Eretz Yisrael isn’t big enough for the two of us”
