Dayan HaGaon HaRav Tzion Boaron (בוארון), a member of the Chief Rabbinate Supreme Court, appears to be heading for the Chief Rabbinate race to become the next Rishon L’Tzion.
The rav began his carrier as a dayan in Tzfas and Tiveria, then becoming av beis din in Beersheva, then Petach Tikvah, until being appointed to the Chief Rabbinate Supreme Court six years ago. The rav also served as a posek for Badatz Beit Yosef at one time, and he has made numerous trips abroad to assist agunos, whose husbands fled the country. The rav is reportedly in close connection with Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita regarding his piskei Halacha.
Once the rav realized Rabbi Moshe Shlomo Amar Shlita cannot run for a second term, he decided to enter the race. The rav, who is 64, has published a SHuT on Shulchan Aruch as well as seforim on Yomtov and Chol Hamoed.

Whether he backed down in the face of growing opposition to his efforts to force his son on the tzibur or the original story attributed to him was not true (as recently has been the case on other matters as well) is really not important. What is significant is that the son of Chacham Ovadia will not be crowned as the new chief rav without some opposition.
