Lawmakers To Vote On Plans For New NYPD Oversight

nypdrNew York City lawmakers are set to vote on the most expansive plans in years to impose new oversight on police.

The City Council is meeting Wednesday night. It’s expected to approve plans to create an outside watchdog for police and make it easier to bring racial profiling claims against the nation’s largest police force.

Mayoral vetoes are expected. So are override votes. Sponsors are optimistic the overrides will succeed.

Proponents say the legislation would make police more accountable and build public trust. Critics say it would hinder policing and endanger safety.

The measures were spurred by concern about the New York Police Department’s extensive use of the tactic known as stop and frisk and its widespread surveillance of Muslims. The surveillance was revealed in stories by The Associated Press.
