A Victory Against Shufersal For A Hadera Resident

A victory for a resident of Hadera is evident in the case of attorney Eyal Amragi, who filed a class action suit two years ago in the Central District Court of Lod against Shufersal.

When the agreement is approved, Shufersal is expected to repay its customers NIS 740,000. Together with attorneys’ fees and compensation to the plaintiff, the amount will be NIS 1 million.

This is a class action filed by Amragi for cookies he purchased at Shufersal in Hadera. The cookies from Vicenza, imported from Italy, were marked ‘kosher-dairy and Jewish baking’ with the approval of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

However, when he read a notice that was distributed to the public by the Chief Rabbinate on February 22, 2018, he found that the cookies had no approval from the Chief Rabbinate’s import department. In addition, Shufersal did not mention that the product is kosher for those who are not stringent regarding chalav yisrael since in fact, the cookies were not chalav yisrael.

In a compromise between the parties awaiting the approval of the Central District Court of Lod, it was determined that approximately 16,000 purchasers of the product that can be traced up to 7 years back from the approval of the settlement agreement will receive an automatic credit to their club membership and a fund will also receive compensation for the customers who are not club members and therefore not identifiable.

Commenting on the compromise agreement awaiting approval, Amragi said, “I am happy that justice has been achieved and I hope that the manufacturers will learn to respect the customers and their faith, and I am very grateful to the lawyer Yosef Chai Aviaziz of the Ben Aryeh Elias office for the excellent professional work”.
