Israel: Computerized Shabbos Goy Startup

Galil Druse resident Eddie Nabuani has come up with a unique startup idea, launching his computerized Shabbos Goy enterprise. Eddie has a degree in computer science and being in Israel, he sees the need for his service – hence the new company.

He explains that when he was employed by Microsoft a manager who was frum would rely upon him to monitor and correct system issues on Shabbos. These are not issues that a layperson can address, but rather problems that require training and expertise, which is what Eddie offers the industry.

He eventually teamed with a few community residents and together they are offering the Israeli high tech industry their Shabbos Goy services. Facilitating the business is the fact that if he and his colleagues are granted system access, they can generally address and correct problems from another locale and they are not required to be on premises.

  1. Is it really smart to allow someone, who may no longer be trustworthy, a member of the 5th column, to have access to your computer over shabbos when they have lots of unsupervised time on a system, They can steal or destroy the computer system.

Not sure if this is halachikally acceptable, but from a business standpoint I would think it is not!

  2. Hi Yosey,

This is Eddie, The Shabbos Goy!

We can argue your opinion, and you have the full right not to trust a Shabbos Goy, the same manner as you can choose not to trust any other employee (or person for that matter!).

As for the issue itself, I have worked at Microsoft for more the 7 years, I also worked at intel, and other international hi-tech companies. They all trusted me as they (should) trust other employees as well.

Moreover, I’m a reserved I.D.F (Israeli Defense Forces) Captain! retired from a combat unit and now server as a save & rescue officer. If I.D.F also relies on me, I think it’s for a good reason(s).

And lastly, This is my business, what I make money of, why would I do anything to jeopardize it?

You as a Jew may be afraid to trust anyone Goy after what the Jewish people have suffered through the holocaust (Spanish Inquisition and other shameful historical events), but even in those old black days of history, there were brave people who stood against the criminal Nazi regime, and helped rescue Jews while jeopardizing their own lives. If you knew what Druze is you would understand that we stood side by side with the Jews a while before the state of Israel was founded! and have been a shoulder to rely on ever since!
