NYC: Cooler Temperatures Today, Heavy Rain Expected This Week


rainTemperatures and heat indices will be lower today with isolated showers and thunderstorms moving in this afternoon and evening. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday afternoon into the night. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will linger in the area Friday.

Precipitation and Timing
The chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase this afternoon, becoming likely in the evening and tapering off after 10 PM. These storms could be strong with a slight risk of severe weather. The greatest threat from severe weather will be damaging winds and heavy downpours. Although rainfall rates of 1 inch per hour for a full hour is not expected, there is a 20% chance of flash flooding.

There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday, increasing in the afternoon and evening bringing the potential for heavy rain. There is a 5% chance of severe weather. A total of 1/2 to 1 inch of rain is expected across the city with locally higher amounts of up to 2 inches possible. Although the risk is low, there is a potential for one inch per hour rainfall rates lasting for a full hour depending on the development of thunderstorms. There is a low (30%) risk of flash flooding. Conditions on Thursday give the potential for thunderstorms training over localized areas of New York City.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected on Friday, these storms bring the potential for heavy rains.
