“People think that in Mexico, we still drive on horses or donkeys,” says resident Shimon Alkon with a chuckle. “But in reality, Mexico City is a city of Torah and Daf Yomi.”

Every Jewish visitor is baffled by the vibrancy of Torah and Jewish life in the Mexican capital. There are thriving Shuls, Yeshivos, Kollelim and more. At the core of this vibrancy and growth is the local community’s commitment to learning the Daf on daily basis. A resounding Kol Torah – a potpourri of Spanish, Hebrew and English – is heard each evening as local businessmen and professionals learn the Daf immediately after finishing work, in the same Bais Medrash as rabbanim and bnei Torah.

No wedding, Bar Mitzvah or other communal event begins until late evening, after this seder is complete.

When over 100,000 yidden worldwide will celebrate The Siyum of Daf Yomi next year under the banner of The Agudah, the Mesaymei HaDaf will be of all ages and garbs, and speak a plethora of languages. Yet, as HaRav Meir Schapira zt”l so aptly envisioned at The Agudah’s Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna – the Daf unites them all.

Mexico City is a premier thread in this fabric – where the Daf remains the engine of the city’s Torah renaissance for decades and brings Jews of all stripes closer to their Father in Heaven. “I grew up in a secular school,” says resident Eddie Alfie, “and every day the Daf Yomi keeps me really religious.”
