A new bill being introduced by Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan would result in criminal sanctions and jail time up to three years for anyone who in funding, hosting events or assisting the PA (Palestinian Authority) in eastern Jerusalem, Yediot Achronot reports.
Today, the law does not allow such punishment to be imposed in East Jerusalem, but only in Yehuda and Shomron as well as in Gaza. The need for the law comes in the wake of what the security establishment has identified as increasing the activities of the Palestinian Authority in the capital, in light of the transfer of the American embassy to the city and the US President Trump’s “Deal of the Century.” The activity is manifested in various PA events.
Minister Gilad Erdan said that “in recent years, the Palestinian Authority has increased its efforts to create influence in Jerusalem, including through significant funding of events,” adding that “the amendment will lead to a dramatic strengthening of deterrence against those who cooperate assisting a Palestinian foothold in Jerusalem.”
