Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held a press conference this afternoon, labeling Mayor Bloomberg’s incendiary comments about the pending racial profiling bill as “fear-mongering” and “absolutely inappropriate.” De Blasio is a supporter of legislation to create an independent inspector general at the NYPD and to ban racial profiling in police tactics. In his remarks, Public Advocate de Blasio said:
“The Mayor and the Commissioner have been tone-deaf for years. They have watched the relationship between police and community in so many neighborhoods get worse and worse, and they’ve rarely acknowledged the dangers that come with a disconnect between police and the people they serve. But this kind of rhetoric today simply obscures the issue further. A racial profiling bill is not going to make anyone less safe. It’s in fact going to make us safer in the long term, because communities will feel they are being treated fairly.”
