Monticello Police are currently investigating a structure fire which occurred at 8:05AM, Monday morning, at 34 St. John Street in the village of Monticello (reported earlier by YWN Catskills).
The structure, which is a 3-story apartment house, was well involved upon arrival of the Monticello Fire Department. Multiple mutual aid fire companies were called in to assist the Monticello fire dept in extinguishing the fire.
At 9:15AM while fire crews were conducting an over haul of the fire scene, a body of an adult male was discovered on the 1st floor area of the building. At this time no positive identity of the deceased male has been made. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of the death. The cause of the fire is also undetermined at this time.
Monticello police are being assisted in the investigation by the New York State Police, Sullivan county District Attorney Office and by fire investigators from the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire.
