Sirens began wailing in southern communities on Sunday night, the eve of 16 Tammuz 5773 at about 23:40. Sirens were heard in the Shimon Regional Council followed by two loud explosions. The rockets detonated in open area. Another rocket launch took place about 15 minutes later, landing in the Shar HaNegev Regional Council.
Sirens sounded again after midnight in Beersheva, Netivot, Shar HaNegev and Ashkelon Coast Regional Council communities. Another attack occurred at about 01:00 in the Western Negev area.
At least six rockets were fired. B’chasdei Hashem there were no reports of fatalities or injuries. The Iron Dome intercepted at least two of the rockets.
Officials report that it appears the Islamic Jihad is responsible for the attacks. The Israel Air Force during the predawn hours attacked terrorist targets in southern Gaza. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon announced that in response to the attacks, Gaza crossings will remain closed today, Monday, 16 Tammuz.
