HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Amar Shlita arrived at the home of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita on Tuesday afternoon, 10 Tammuz 5773. The two met following days of tensions surrounding the race for new Chief Rabbis of Israel and the fall of the Amar Bill in Knesset, which is being attributed to Shas.
Kikar Shabbat adds that on erev Shabbos Parshas Chukas, Rav Ovadia sent a letter to Rav Amar detailing why he instructed Aryeh Deri to remove Shas’ support for the bill which intended to permit Rav Amar to serve a second term in office.
Aryeh Deri explains that Rav Ovadia withdrew his support due to the candidacy of Rabbi David Stav, which he opposes adamantly. When Rabbi Yaakov Ariel was out of the race, Shas was expected to back Bayit Yehudi’s new candidate, Rabbi Stav, which Rav Ovadia would not accept.
