My wife, our son, and I are moving from Israel to Passaic, NJ in mid-July. We have been told that the best shul for relatively-new baaley tzhuva is either PTI or BTU. Can someone please advise? Thanks.
May 24, 2019 1:15 pm at 1:15 pm #1732733JosephParticipantPassaic has squeaky pastures.
May 24, 2019 2:51 pm at 2:51 pm #1732751Mattisyahu SingerParticipantJoseph, not sure what that exactly means. Can you please explain? Thanks.
May 24, 2019 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #1732765☕️coffee addictParticipantHatzlacha on your move and your growth in yiddishkeit
May 24, 2019 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #1732738613gershParticipantProb more PTI, BTU used to be more BT friendly but that was like 20 years ago (before it became an older more established place), regardless most of Passaic is pretty nice and just abt any shul would work for your fam. I would not get set on any one shul before u move in, once you are here hop around till u find one u like.
May 24, 2019 4:24 pm at 4:24 pm #1732749Undercover BochurParticipantI live in Passaic and daven in BTU. I love the Passaic community, a great vibe of a thriving Jewish community but not an overload of gashmius. Has one “minyan factory”, seasons supermarket, 2 pizza shops, a few reasturants, a bagel shop, sock store and right near teaneck and monsey. BTU has a much more assimilated yeshivish balei tshuva crowd (most people you wouldn’t be ale to tell) and the TIF (tiferes Israel) has a much more out of town feel (colored shirts, etc.).
May 24, 2019 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #1732761Alex613ParticipantIf you would like to be part of a Yeshiva with mostly baalei teshuva for working people and learning on similar levels to major Yeshivos out there, Yeshiva Ner Boruch-PTI would be for you, BTU is not a Yeshiva but has many shiurim, learning sedarim including Daf Hashavua being a major impact there. It also depends where in town you are moving to and how long want to walk to on Shabbos. Pti is on Passaic Avenue closer to Clifton, BTU is on aycrigg avenue, closer to the Yeshiva Gedola, and the Passaic Clifton Community Kollel is there at night ssder
May 24, 2019 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #1732785JosephParticipantWhich shul is the one with the YU rabbi with the long beard, Mishpacha columnist, that the shul used to be Conservative?
May 24, 2019 5:47 pm at 5:47 pm #1732794May 24, 2019 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #1732797Mattisyahu SingerParticipantI was told that the Ahavas is not really a Shul for families but it is instead a place with around-the-clock minyan.
May 24, 2019 6:32 pm at 6:32 pm #1732800JosephParticipantAnd where does the Ahavas fit into the spectrum (i.e. what types frequent it)?
May 26, 2019 9:44 pm at 9:44 pm #1733286Yabia OmerParticipantNo he’s referring to Beis Sholom
May 26, 2019 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #1733294☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantKehilas Beis Sholom is in Clifton, not Passaic.
May 26, 2019 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #1733296Sy GParticipantI’ve Davened and Lained at PTI for 4 years, as well as attended many of their daily shiurim. PTI has advanced over the years by leaps and bounds and has grown in its Torah as well as its atmosphere of אהבה אחוה ורעות.
Rabbi Shlomo Singer, the Rov, is very approachable.May 27, 2019 7:11 am at 7:11 am #1733345yitzchokmParticipantAhvas is a shul for the entire family. The minyon factory is just secondary.
@Joseph
The type of people that are “hashkafaicly” aligned to the mishpocha magazine frequent his shul.May 27, 2019 7:51 am at 7:51 am #1733382JosephParticipantYitzchokM: How would you describe the hashkafa of those aligned to Mishpacha/Ahavas? I would tend to assume left of center from a Chareidi perspective, but just wanted to make sure I understood you correctly.
May 27, 2019 9:10 am at 9:10 am #1733403🍫Syag LchochmaParticipant…asks a man who thinks of neturei karta as center.
May 27, 2019 9:11 am at 9:11 am #1733413🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantUndercover – I thought seasons closed down.
Yitzchok- agreed, thank you for clarifying
May 27, 2019 9:34 am at 9:34 am #1733432JosephParticipantSyag: Please give a few examples of “Chareidi Left-Wing”, in your opinion. TY
June 24, 2019 6:37 pm at 6:37 pm #1746328Mattisyahu SingerParticipantYitzchokm, sorry you have it backwards. IMHO, the main feature of the Ahavas is the minyan factory. I tried the main Shabbos morning minyan twice and there were less than 50 men each time. Seems more like a place for convenience.
June 25, 2019 10:33 am at 10:33 am #1746617☕️coffee addictParticipant“Undercover – I thought seasons closed down.“
It did but someone bought it and reopened it
June 25, 2019 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #1746788Undercover BochurParticipantJust to clarify, Ahavas is known more for the “minyan factory” convenience. Yes, people do daven there on Shabbos and call it their shul but it is known for ’round the clock minyanim.
In terms of seasons, it never closed down and its still around. They declared bankruptcy but stayed open thought.
June 27, 2019 8:18 am at 8:18 am #1747927anonymous JewParticipantIsn’t this topic L’H? What is the difference between a restaurant review and a community review? It’s just an anonymous, non halachic, opinion of a community
