Williamsburg: Worker Critically Hurt In Shaftway Fall At Building Site

Officials say a construction worker tumbled down a roughly 10-foot (3-meter) shaftway at a Brooklyn building site and is hospitalized with critical injuries.

He fell around 9 a.m. Friday at a property where a three-story apartment building is planned on Richardson Street, in the Williamsburg neighborhood.

The city Buildings Department says he had been preparing to install masonry around a shaftway where cellar stairs will go.

The agency has now halted all work at the site and cited general contractor Avo Construction LLC with six violations, including failing to safeguard the site. Officials say the worker wasn’t wearing a safety harness and the shaftway had no guardrails.

Messages were left for Avo.

Inspectors stopped insulation work on the site about two months ago, but other work was allowed to continue.
