Feared Hazmat Incident: Trucks Goes Up In Flames Near Ashdod


A fire broke out on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at a site for the dismantling of trucks in Moshav S’dei Uziyahu in the Ashdod area. The cause of the fire was apparently an oil tank that caught fire or nearby flammable materials located in warehouses in the area. The flames spread to several trucks and a nearby wheat field. Firefighting teams were sent from the Ashdod and Ashkelon stations along with hazmat (hazardous materials) units, and B’chasdei Hashem, they were able to bring the fires under control.

“The commander of the fire units said that this is an area that deals with the dismantling of trucks, and there are large quantities of motor oil in the area, as well as parts of trucks that were caught in the fire and burned,” said the commander of the Ashdod station, Tzvika Moyal. “The teams carried out a fire extinguishing and protection operation, including the isolation of gas tanks that endanger the activity of the firefighters. There was heavy acrid smoke that appeared to be coming from Ashdod.” He added that there was no involvement of dangerous substances (hazmat) and no casualties in the fire.

About a week ago, a fire broke out in a nursing home in the village of Reina near Nazareth, during which a man of about 40 was injured. The MDA team that arrived at the scene gave the man medical assistance and evacuated him to Rambam Hospital in Haifa with burns all over his body while he was anesthetized and intubated. Two other people were slightly injured by smoke inhalation and evacuated to the Italian Hospital in the city.
