Montreal: Kosher Restaurant Firebombed For Second Time

shThe Café Shalom restaurant on Queen Mary Rd., just west of Décarie Blvd., was firebombed early Friday by two “incendiary devices,” Montreal police said.

Damage inside the restaurant from the Molotov-style attack was light, Constable Danny Richer added.

Two Molotovs were thrown into the business, Constable Daniel Lacoursière subsequently specified.

Firefighters were called shortly after 2 a.m.

The owner told police that he had not been subjected to any recent threats or harassment.

Richer said police weren’t aware of any similar earlier incidents at the restaurant.

A sprinkler system put out the fire.

Most of the damage was caused by water, Richer said.

Richard Bourdeau, an operations chief with the Montreal fire department, placed the preliminary damage estimate in the $15,000 range.

Residents above the business were forced out.

“All have been returned to their homes,” Bourdeau said about 7 a.m., adding that he could not immediately specify how many persons were affected.

Firefighters have transferred the case to police arson investigators.

Last Oct. 18, the Chops Resto Bar — a high-end kosher restaurant also along Queen Mary, one block immediately east of the Shalom — was hit in a similar attack.

In that instance, a single Molotov was thrown in through a front window, about 4 a.m.

The resulting blaze was also extinguished by a sprinkler system.

Two suspects wearing hoodies had fled that scene, Montreal police said at the time.

Details were not immediately available Friday on any results of the earlier investigation.
