An umbrella group of law enforcement and sanitation unions is backing former New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson for mayor.
The United Uniformed Workers of New York announced the endorsement Wednesday. Chairman Michael Palladino praised the Democrat’s “integrity, experience and leadership skills.”
Palladino heads the Detectives Endowment Association. It’s one of 20 unions in the coalition. They represent more than 125,000 city and state workers, though the group doesn’t include all law enforcement and emergency workers’ unions in the city.
Two unions, representing city jail officers and sanitation workers, didn’t vote on the group’s endorsement.
Thompson has pledged to hire 2,000 more police officers if elected. He also has expressed support for the police tactic known as stop and frisk, though he’s said it has sometimes been misused.
