The Long Island Rail Road is planning new steps to shrink gaps between platforms and trains, which have been under scrutiny since a teenager fell through a gap and died in 2006.
LIRR officials are proposing to install metal plates extending two inches beneath the doors on the commuter railroad’s cars.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s board is set to vote next week on spending more than $9 million to install the plates on most LIRR cars. Similar extensions would be added separately to the rest of the LIRR fleet.

Very intresting how can a teeen fall through the platform by the LIRR now which lines are going to be affected.
Excellent idea. Same thing should be done on certain NYC wide train platforms.
AND WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE SUBWAYS?
Geloibt der Bashefer! I won’t trip the next time I attempt to travel to Far Rockaway or Great Neck.
To number 3- A few NYC subway platforms in Manhattan are extremely wide and dangerous.
why don’t they make those london tee-shirts instead which say “mind the gap”
Well there is no information on the Long Island Railroad’s website but I hope there is soon so I can see the schedule changes.
