As the US Congress appears compelled to release information to the American public regarding N. Korea’s activities in Syria, it may make a link between Israel and the CIA-reported Israeli bombing of a Syrian nuclear facility in September 2007.
Such a move may result in increased tensions between Jerusalem and Damascus, at a time when Syrian state-run news agencies are reporting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is talking about a willingness to relinquish control over the Golan Heights for a comprehensive peace deal with Syria.
To date, Israel has remained silent regarding the Sept. 2007 incursion into Syrian airspace, but Congress is now demanding release of information, not as much concerned regarding Syria’s eagerness to join the Mideast nuclear race, but more pointing an accusing finger regarding the actions of North Korea.
In Jerusalem, senior officials are carefully monitoring events in Washington, concerned the CIA’s release of information could have serious ramifications in the Mideast, particularly between Israel and Syria. Events be what they may, it appears Israel will continue to maintain silence, most likely not denying or confirming any of the information to be released to the US Congress.
