Smotrich Announces His Terms For Entering The Coalition – Setting His Bar Extremely High

The chairman of the Ichud Leumi party and member of the United Right-Wing ticket, MK Bezalel Smotrich, said Tuesday that one of the preconditions that will be established in the coalition negotiations before entering the next government is agreement to amend the nation’s Basic Law within 60 days of establishing the coalition, along with the education and justice portfolios.

Speaking with Kalman Lipskind of KAN Reshet Bet Radio on Tuesday, Smotrich explained that “we are talking about the education and justice portfolios, and we will stand firm on this and we will receive it”.

He added the amending of the Basic Law within 60 days of the new government is critical, explaining “The High Court of Justice forbade us to hold the bodies of terrorists, compromises the war on terrorism, interfered in the Regulation Law and the law to deal with the illegal aliens infiltrating into Israel. So, what value should we go to elections? ”

“Hence, the need to amend the Basic Law towards permitting the Knesset to override the High Court with a simple majority, which Smotrich feels is the democratic way. There is no democratic reason to demand a special majority. Netanyahu is aware of this. Netanyahu wants a coalition government and if he wishes to establish a right-wing government, and keep his promise to voters, he will have to commit to passing the law for if not, there will be no government.”

Smotrich insists that the High Court has an ideological and political position and the law must be amended as part of the battle to restore the authority to Knesset.
