The National Weather Service has confirmed that a swath of storm damage in eastern New York was caused by a tornado with winds that topped out at 125 mph.
The agency says the twister touched down in the Montgomery County town of Florida during strong storms just before 7 p.m. Wednesday and ran 17 miles before lifting over the town of Rotterdam in Schenectady County.
The damage across the one-mile wide path included roofs torn from buildings, toppled power lines and a large number of trees knocked down or damaged.
There were no deaths and one reported injury.
Weather service investigators have been surveying the damage Thursday.
The tornado was in a line of strong thunderstorms that caused damage from central New York on east.
