Stern: Extremist Rabbonim Control Bayit Yehudi – It’s a National Disaster

bennMK (The Movement) Eliezer Stern, whose bill seeking to increase the voter body for the election of Chief Rabbis of Israel lashed out against the Bayit Yehudi party. Stern responded angrily earlier in the week when Bayit Yehudi vetoed his bill.

“Extremist rabbonim are ruling Bayit Yehudi and this is a disaster for Jewish identity in the State of Israel” Stern stated.

Srugim reports that Stern learned Bayit Yehudi MKs feared their support of the bill to increase the size of the voting body may lead to Rabbi David Lau becoming the next Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi and therefore, they would not support his bill. Rav Lau is viewed as a chareidi candidate and is therefore persona non grata for the dati leumi party.

“We discuss the matter and reach agreement, and then some rabbi comes and instructs them to act differently,” Stern adds.

In response to Bayit Yehudi’s veto of the Stern Bill, Justice Minister (The Movement) Tzipi Livni on Thursday, 21 Sivan 5773 announced she is vetoing the Ministry of Religious Services reform bill. The ministry is under Bayit Yehudi control.

  1. Elazar Stern was the one who wanted to get rid of the Hesder Yeshiva. He was the one mad when several religious soldiers left a performace where women were singing. He was the one saying that new laws from Gedolim get more and more absurd. And now the chutzpah to say “Extremist rabbonim are ruling Bayit Yehudi and this is a disaster for Jewish identity in the State of Israel”.
