NYC Lawmakers Considering Changes To ‘Muni Meter’ System

munNew York City lawmakers are considering changes to the city’s Muni Meter system that could end unnecessary parking payments.

A new bill calls for the meters to be deactivated when parking rules are not in effect or when receipt paper is not available. Currently, if a driver deposits cash into a Muni Meter when payment isn’t required, there’s no way to get a refund.

The legislation would restructure the city’s 13,000 meters to only accept money when drivers are required to pay.

At times when drivers aren’t required to pay, like if metered parking expires at 7 p.m., the machine would turn off. It would also reject money if the machine is unable to print receipts.

“If you don’t have paper in the meter, the meter should be turned off,” Councilman David Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) said. “It’s quite a scam the city has going here.”

The mayor’s office has said it was reviewing the legislation.

  1. Our mayor michel bloomberg will never think of such legislature because this will not add any revenue to his budget. The fact that he gets money illegal doesn’t bother him at all.

  2. Muni meters discriminate against people with small children. The children have to be taken out of the car, to the muni meter, back to the car to put the stupid piece of paper in the windshield while balancing a baby and then finally on to our destination. And when the muni is out of paper or doesnt work, the situation is that much more difficult and unfair. And if it’s raining, snowing or icy? Near impossible!

  3. Question ? How do the Ticket Agents see if there’s a receipt if it’s raining or snowing on your front window ?
