According to a Channel 12 Israel report, the cellphone of “Blue and White” Party Chairman Benny Gantz was compromised by Iran.
The report states that the Shin Bet informed Gantz last month to tell him that his personal details, texts, and other information were “in hostile hands.”
Additionally, the Shin Bet told him that any sensitive information could be used against him in the weeks leading up to the election.
There was reportedly no classified information on the hacked device.
A statement from Gantz’s campaign insinuated his opponents leaked the news to damage his political bid, saying the timing of the report just weeks before Israel’s April 9 elections “raises important questions.”
A campaign official says the security breach happened several months ago, before Gantz, a former IDF Chief of Staff, entered politics. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.
Gantz did cancel an election campaign event that was scheduled for tonight.
