The following is the text of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s weekly radio address as prepared for delivery on 1010 WINS News Radio for Sunday, May 26, 2013.
“Good Morning. This is Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
“A few months ago, our city’s beaches were devastated when Hurricane Sandy struck. But in the wake of the storm, we promised New Yorkers that, no matter what it took, all of the city’s beaches would be open by Memorial Day. We kept our promise: as of yesterday, all eight of the city’s free public beaches are open for the season, and they’ll remain open daily through Labor Day, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
“It took a tremendous amount of work to get our beaches back open – and we owe a lot of gratitude to the City agencies that helped make it possible, and to the thousands of New Yorkers who volunteered to lend a hand after Sandy. Together, they cleared tons of debris, replaced tons of sand, rebuilt damaged structures, and much more so that we could safely open our beaches for Memorial Day. But we’re not done yet: We’re going to continue working to make our beaches more resilient for the long term – and, most importantly, to protect nearby communities from future storms.
“On Friday, I went to one of those beaches – Coney Island – which has undergone an incredible turnaround since the days after Sandy. The boardwalk is back open – so are beloved New York City institutions like Nathan’s and the New York Aquarium. And on Friday, we announced the opening of the newest addition to Coney’s unbeatable collection of attractions: Steeplechase Plaza. The plaza’s centerpiece is the restored B&B Carousel – originally built in Coney Island in 1906. The 2-acre park also has an open public plaza, a shaded area for leisure, a boardwalk café, and a party area for families. It’s going to help Coney Island have another record-breaking year of attendance – and it’s going to help bring even more new jobs and businesses to the neighborhood.
“The City has made major investments in Coney Island – and today, the area’s future is looking brighter than ever. You can say the same about another focus of our Administration’s investment: the city’s tech sector. Last week, a homegrown New York City start-up, Tumbler, was bought by Yahoo! for $1.1 billion – more evidence that our City has become a major force in the tech world. Last year, about 100 New York City-based tech companies were acquired for a total of more than $8 billion. The number of tech jobs here has grown 30 percent since 2005. And we’re the only US region where tech venture capital investment increased between 2007 and 2011.
“These companies are creating new jobs and revenue that keeps our City strong; they’re also generating a lot of confidence in our city’s economic future. That was on display again last week, when we helped announce a very exciting new addition to our roster of big-league sports teams: the New York City Football Club. It’s the 20th Major League Soccer franchise, and the first big-league soccer team in the five boroughs since the 70s. Back then, many businesses were leaving our City – and this new team is a great example of how far we’ve come to reverse that trend. It’s great news for our millions of soccer fans, and it’s going to bring even more new jobs and economic growth to our City.
“This Memorial Day, as we enjoy all our City has to offer, let’s also remember to honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.
“This is Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Thanks for listening.”
