IMPORTANT EREV PESACH INFO FOR YOUR COMMUNITY COURTESY OF YWN

yw logo3.jpgBelow is a comprehensive list compiled by YWN for MANY Jewish communities including, Chometz burning locations, garbage pick-up information and schedules, Bikur Cholim information for hospitals – and other useful information for the next two days. YWN would like to publicly thank the various Askonim who have taken the time out to send us this information. Should you see any locations which we did not list, please email all information to [email protected] and we will try to add it.

A special thanks must be given to the Police Departments, Fire Departments, Sanitation Department, and elected officials for helping arrange all of this.

SAFETY FIRST:
Hatzolah is once again urging everyone in all neighborhoods, to please watch your children during Biur Chometz. Unfortunately each year, there are children who R”L end up spending Pesach in a burn unit, after “playing with fire”.

Please watch your children.

All fires must be supervised by a mature, responsible adult.  Do not park cars near or on smoldering embers.

Hatzolah also advises that no paint thinners, aerosol cans, sprays lighter fluid or any other flammable liquids are to be used to ignite the fire.  These items have caused accidents and are extremely dangerous.

Water, fire extinguishers and or sand should be readily available at the site.

Following these simple rules will insure the safety of our loved ones during this Yom Tov!

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ENTIRE NYC / 5 BOROS:
Misaskim has made arrangements with a non-Jew to work with them regarding any incidents of Kovod Hames. Chas Vishalaom if a person is Niftar on Yom Tov, and there is a possibility of an autopsy about to take place, or any other urgent legal matter, please call the Misaskim 24hr hotline number 718-854-4548 – and it will be answered. Please note, this arrangement is for Kavod Hames related emergencies ONLY! Any questions regarding a Levaya on Yom Tov Sheni, should be asked to your Rov, and arrangements made with your local Chevra Kaddisha.

NOTE: Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations will be suspended on Monday, April 21, and Thursday-Saturday, April 24-26, throughout the 5 Boros. All other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.

ALL NEIGHBORHOODS PLACED IN ALPHABETITACAL ORDER!

Baltimore:

Biur Chometz in front of Glen Avenue Fire Station, Glen & Cross Country, from 6:30AM until 11:30AM. There will be dumpsters available at the site for dumping
plastic bags, bottles, etc, as well as barrels to burn your Chometz. (The dumpsters will be  available starting Thursday night at the Glen Avenue location)

Boro Park:

Regular trash and recycling should be placed out in plastic bags by midnight the night before April 17th or April 18th. Sanitation will resume regular garbage and recycling collection on Saturday, April 19.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and John J. Doherty, Commissioner of the Dept. of Sanitation, will extend full cooperation to insure the continuance of a tradition started 40 years ago by Rabbi Edgar Gluck of Community Board 12.

Rabbi Edgar Gluck, together with Wolf Sender, District Manager of Community Board 12, met with officials from Sanitation, Fire and the Police Department to devise a plan for Biur Chometz and Sanitation cleanup.

Because of regulations regarding Freon gas and floral carbons, it will be necessary to observe the following:

BEFORE putting out refrigerators, air conditioners or dehumidifiers for collection you must call 311 or go to the Sanitation Website at www.nyc.gov/sanitation to make an appointment to remove the Freon. This appointment should be made a week before your regular recycling day.  No refrigerator, air conditioner or dehumidifier will be picked up if you do not call beforehand.,  This call is necessary in order for the Freon gas to be removed from these items prior to collection.  Doors must be removed from refrigerators.

ALL BULK ITEMS can be put out for up until, and including Wednesday, April 16th.

If a bulk item has 50% or more metal such as carriages or strollers, refrigerators, stoves, bed springs, etc. it must be put out for recycling.  These items will be collected by the Recycling Truck on your regular recycling days.  Other items such as rugs, carpets, bookcases, desks, chairs, etc. are considered regular bulk and will be picked up on your regular collection days.

NO BULK WILL BE PICKED UP AFTER WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16TH

HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE:  Garbage and recycling will be collected as normally scheduled.

On Friday, April 18th,  the entire Community Board 12 District will get one collection.  Both household and recycling will be picked up.  Please note that all items, including recycling, must be placed out for collection by 12 AM Thursday morning in order to ensure that all of your garbage and debris is picked up before Pesach.

ALL COLLECTIONS WILL BE COMPLETED BY NOON ON FRIDAY!

RECYCLABLES:  Newspapers must be either tied up or in clear plastic bags.  Metal and plastic are to be placed in either blue or clear plastic bags that are securely tied.  All cardboard boxes must be crushed and tied.  Bags must be side by side and placed by the curb.

All bulk items should be placed at the curb as well.  Doors on refrigerators should be removed.  Fluorescent light bulbs must be wrapped and tied in order to prevent breakage.

Try to leave driveways clear so that the Sanitation men can retrieve bulk and/or garbage quickly and efficiently.

PLEASE DO NOT DOUBLE PARK CARS.  IT IS DIFFICULT TO LIFT BULK ITEMS OVER CARS

Biur Chometz will occur on Friday, April 18. All Biur Chometz must occur before 11:46 AM for the safety of the community. The Fire Department will strictly enforce the 11:46AM curfew. Biur Chometz may only occur at specified burning sites, and must be supervised by an adult. After the burning, Chometz should be put at the curb in plastic bags.

AS REQUIRED, ONLY 10 PIECES OF CHOMETZ SHOULD BE USED FOR THE BURNING. IF LARGE BAGS OF CHOMETZ ARE SEEN, THEY WILL BE TURNED AWAY.

Do not burn Chometz enclosed in silver wrap (foil). Chometz should be put at the curb in plastic bags.  This will eliminate the necessity for retrieving and washing out garbage cans. Your cooperation will expedite the pickup.

Methodist & Maimonides Hospitals (Brooklyn):

Patients and their relatives, who unfortunately must be in a hospital over Pesach this year, can at least rest assured that their Pesach needs will be taken care of with the utmost care and attention. The staff of Bikur Cholim of Boro Park are busy scrubbing the Bikur Cholim rooms at Maimonides and New York Methodist Hospital to get rid of the last traces of chometz, making sure that they are perfectly kashered for Pesach. They will be stocking the shelves with large quantities of Kosher L’Pesach food, including generous amounts of matzah and grape juice, fresh fruit, yogurts, hard boiled eggs and Kosher for Pesach cookies and cakes. Bikur Cholim takes its commitment seriously, ensuring that no one will go hungry!

While Pesach preparations are nothing new for Bikur Cholim—they happen annually– the recent addition of a new annex down the block from Maimonides Hospital at 5017 10th Avenue, will mean that this year’s Pesach will be all the more comfortable for families with relatives  in the hospital.

With this addition, families can also look forward to streamlined and improved services year-round. But over Pesach, when concerns about kashrus are more sensitive, having the annex will relieve visitors of any concerns .The daily hot meals that many have come to rely on when visiting relatives in the hospital, will continue over Pesach. The renowned Weiss Catering of Williamsburg, under the strict supervision of Harav Binyomin Gruber, Shlita, will prepare hot meals, Kosher L’Pesach, to be served twice a day in the annex , morning and evening, for those who want to eat there or take it to go.
“Having the annex will give people in our community greater peace of mind so that they can focus their attention on their relatives in the hospital without worrying where the next meal will come from ,” said Chaim Schoenblum, Executive Officer of Bikur Cholim of BoroPark. “In the annex you will feel like you are in your own dining room.”

At Methodist  Hospital, the same hot meals will be served in the  large and comfortable Bikur Cholim Room on the first floor. But the personal, attentive care doesn’t stop there. In addition to the daily meals and food supply, Bikur Cholim will be running Sedarim in designated areas at both hospitals for all those who wish to attend. All logistics will be taken care of , including bringing wheelchair-bound patients.

Those patients who cannot make it to the Seder, will have a personal Seder plate delivered to their bedside, which will include all the necessary items. Thanks to Bikur Cholim of Boro Park’s dedicated staff, patients and their relatives can be assured that their Pesach needs will be taken care of completely.

To contact Bikur Cholim concerning Pesach arrangements, please call 718.438.2020.

Note from Rabbi Daniel Coleman; Chaplain, North Shore University Hospital (Manhasset, NY):

Here is some information if you or someone you know is hospitalized (may it be for simchas!) in New York:

Almost all New York hospitals have a Department of Pastoral Care (or Spiritual Care) with professionally trained (board certified) chaplains/clergy, although not all have a Rabbi on staff.

Some have an active bikur cholim that visit patients. Often you must request a visit (rather than expect one just because you list yourself as Jewish upon admission) because hospitals are bound by (HIPAA) confidentiality rules that prohibit them from giving out lists of names.

Not all have a ‘bikur cholim’ room or hospitality suite that can provide food, respite etc.  The chaplains, or the nearest Shuls will have further information.

Note that every patient can have an influence on hospital administration to provide greater resources to Jewish patients simply by filling in the patient-satisfaction survey they get after discharge and mailing it back in with their comments. The surveys are also an important and effective way to show hakoras hatov for any Jewish services utilized/appreciated.

Finally, since Pesach is almost upon us, if you think you may be discharged on Yom Tov consult your Rav regarding the permissibility of utilizing a cab service to get you home on Yom Tov. (For example, if you give birth late this Thursday or Friday, a hospital is unlikely to be able to extend the standard 48 hour stay till Yom Tov ends on Monday evening as the beds are needed for new patients.)

(Thanks to YW-112 for all his invaluable assistance in cmpiling this list!)

  1. There will be a Biur Chometz in Philadelphia:
at Lower Merion Synagogue 123 Old Lancaster Ave. Starting at 9:45 to 11:15 A.M. There will be a dumpster there also that will be picked up at 9:00 A.M.

  2. I am just in complete shock as I see these lists of places to go for help in prepararion for Pesach, which grows each year. The concerns go into the smallest details of possibilities of maybe something happening.

I just can’t understand why this galus continues when HKB’H has this nation of Tzadikim that are so meticulous in fulfilling even the most minor of halochos, for themselves and even more concerned about helping others fulfill them, with the same sanctity as the most compelling D’raisah. What other people would even bother with these things?

There is no other like Klal Yisroel, who are truly deservant, more than ever before, for the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu and THE Geulah Shleimah so we can bring the Korban Pesach to the Bayis Shlishi.

  3. 5 Towns:
Chometz burning at both the Woodmere Fire Department, 25 Irving Place, and the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, 75 Washington Avenue.

  4. #2 – are you kidding?
10% of the Jewish people care only about the !0% of the Jewish people that LOOK/ACT like them.

And you’re wondering why Hashem hasn’t brought the Geulah? Have you ever thought what it looks like to HIM??? I’m sure Hashem is more concerned about the 74 intermarriages that will happen (in American alone – every day!) tomorrow than where we will do our biyur chometz.

Sorry to spoil the self-congratulations but someone’s got to expose the REAL chometz!

  5. #4 be careful.

Read about what happened to Moshe Rabbeinu when he said “od me’at uskaluni”.

10% of the Jewish people (actually it’s closer to 3%) care about 100% of the Jewish people, whether they look and act like them or not.

  6. Anyone who had the cure for my child’s cancer and withheld it…I couldn’t say in public what I would do to them.

less than 1% of the frum world is involved/cares about outreach to their non-frum brothers and sisters. That’s a fact. You can CLAIM that we all care about them, but we have very weird ways of showing it.
