Official: Treasury Played No Role In IRS Targeting

irsThe Treasury Department’s No. 2 official is telling Congress that his agency played no role in the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups.

In a prepared statement, Deputy Secretary Neal Wolin told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday that he learned last year that a Treasury inspector general was investigating the targeting. The IRS has revealed it subjected tea party and other conservative groups seeking non-profit status to extra scrutiny from 2010 to 2012.

Wolin says he told the inspector general to follow the facts wherever they lead and that Treasury would stay out of the way.

Lawmakers are trying to learn whether the IRS targeting was politically motivated. The inspector general and IRS officials have said there is no evidence of that.

  1. GS-12 civil servants do not undertake political initiative on their own. If they were targetting conservatives, especially in a city far removed from the “blue” bastions of Weashington, someone higher up told them to do so.
