The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court overturned an indictment filed against Reuven Chacham, a Jerusalem resident, who posted a sign on his balcony saying, “traitorous leftists.”
Chacham, one of the veteran residents of Jerusalem, claimed through his attorney Itamar Ben-Givir that the municipality acted in a policy of “selective enforcement” against him when he discriminated between him and left-wingers who posted other signs, while no steps were taken against them in the case in question.
Judge Sigal Albo accepted Ben Givir’s claims and ruled that the indictment was canceled because it was “in material contradiction to the principles of justice and legal fairness, and that the municipality indeed took a discriminatory policy against a Chacham.”
Attorney Ben-Givir said in response to the verdict that “I am satisfied that the court accepted my arguments today, and in effect, explicitly stated that the Jerusalem municipality discriminated between rightists and left-wingers, and maintains.”
As for the contents of the sign that was hung, Ben-Givir says, “I do not think that all the leftists are traitors, but indeed there are signs of treachery on the left, and moreover I believe that freedom of expression makes it possible to say these things. The leftists can speak in the name of freedom of speech, so surely this right is reserved for the right-wing.”
