Jewish Leaders Meet With President of Udmurtia

ore.jpgThis week, Jewish leaders in Udmurtia met with the republic’s President, Alexander Volkov. The Jewish community was represented by Chief Rabbi of Izhevsk and Chabad Shliach Mikhoel Urin.

During the meeting, Chief Rabbi Urin spoke about the activities of the community and its plans for the future. The main theme of the discussion, however, was the possibility for the Regional Administration to allocate a land plot to the Jewish community for the purposes of building a Shul and a separate plot to establish a Jewish section of a local cemetery.

President Volkov asked about Udmurtia’s Jewish population, which is currently estimated at around 5,000 persons. The top official also reviewed the architectural plans for the community’s future Synagogue, remarking that such a grand building will beautify the city. While he expressed that allocating a lot for its construction is much less complicated than doing so for a Jewish cemetery, he nevertheless pledged his support in trying to achieve these two goals.

The Jewish community of Izhevsk is a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
