If Finance Minister Yair Lapid has his way, not only will Israelis have to pay arnona property tax on their homes while alive, they will have to pay on the kevarim of their ones. The minister wishes to abolish the arnona exemption on graves.
If the plan is accepted, it will not demand payment for years past, but beginning in 2014. This will compel family members to pay for the graves of their loved ones. The proposed plan does not explain if payments would be monthly or annually, but states the following;
1. One would have to pay arnona for a kever
2. A double plot (husband/wife) would be considered one plot
3. One buying a kever in advance would have to begin paying when the kever is purchased
4. In-the-wall burial will be significantly less expensive.
According to Yediot Achronot, quoting a chevra kadisha, based on current commercial arnona rates in different cities, the cost of arnona for a year in the following batei chaim as follows.
1. Holon/Bat Yam – 1,222 NIS
2. Trumpeldor Beis Chaim/Tel Aviv – 500 NIS
3. Har Menuchos/Yerushalayim – 445 NIS
4. Yarkon & Segula/Petach Tikvah – 400 NIS
5. Kfar Saba – 357 NIS
6. Haifa – 226 NIS
7. Dimona – 209 NIS
The proposed arnona tax law does not state what action will be taken in light of non-payment or how the law will determine which survivors of a niftar will be held responsible to make payment.
One response came from Haifa Mayor Yonah Yahav, who called the plan absurd.
A Treasury official responding to the report states the intention is to charge the various chevra kadisha organizations, not the families of the deceased.

May he be zocheh to claim the tax from those who are occupying the real estate – personally – bekarov.
and in the event of non-payment, what is his plan?
This is so absurd, even for Lapid, that I question the reporter. While Lapid, for our perspective is evil and perhaps mad, there is usually some well thought of pattern to his madness.
i bet they have An exemption for scummy politicians
will they foreclose and evict them for nonpayment?
I guess the Rambam should be expecting eviction letters soon.
Next year, Meiron will be in Uman, and they’ll move MeOras HaMachpela to a NYC!! Maybe London will put in a bid for Kever Rochel.
How about the cemetery in Tzfas?
give am egotistical politician a little power and he goes nuts
“The proposed arnona tax law does not state what action will be taken in light of non-payment”
What are they going to do? Dig up the bones & throw it in the sea?
This is crazy. When people buried their loved ones, at the time, they were told there wasn’t a tax so how can that change now? That’s a breach of contract.
As far as the Government charging the Chevra Kadisha & not the family, yeh right! They will just pass on the savings to the family! “We don’t charge tax. We only collect it”! Get real!
I imagine if you don’t pay, electra gets to dig up the grave and build a mall in its place
waiting patiently for rabbiofberlin and brooklynmom to somehow blame us ultra-orthodox for having too many deceased relatives, and to show us in their infinite wisdom how its really all our fault and if only we would share the burden, all problems would melt away….
If this goes through, we can honestly say that they are getting us – coming and going!

Lapid realizes the “chevra’i kadisha” are one of power bases of the ultra-orthodox
hence..
This will not make him popular with non-chareidim.
If both members of a couple didn’t work will they not be eligible to a ‘hanacha’ or is that only gonna be for living quarters??
This is a lunatic. I understand his logic though. he is a rasha almost completely. Instead of burial he wants people to be cremate which goes against TORAH LAW. he came up with an idea where he is going to charge arnona to get the frum people. he end will be miserable and he will have a nasty down fall soon. Speedily and in our days. When MOSHIACH comes he will be kicking himself forever
Thank you Yeshivaman2020 for writing exactly what I thought as I read the article. Perhaps I would add Charliehall and RamatShilo too…..
tell him that charadim are only renting until tichyas hamaisim!

Hey come on, don’t forget Gadolhadorah.
