February 10, 2019 7:45 am at 7:45 am #1676622HaimyParticipant
In light of the current political climate where the Black community feels insulted by the use of blackface, I think lemaan hashalom we shouldn’t use it.
February 10, 2019 11:10 am at 11:10 am #1676793👑RebYidd23ParticipantMany frum people did not appreciate the Halloween costume of a stereotyped Hassidic couple.
February 10, 2019 11:19 am at 11:19 am #1676800writerParticipantThat frum couple costume also held a sign of we buy houses with cash. That’s like holding a sign saying we love fried Chicken.
February 10, 2019 11:37 am at 11:37 am #1676805JosephParticipantI have no objections to goyim on Halloween wearing a costume of a stereotyped Hasidic couple and I have no problem with Jews wearing blackface on Purim.
February 10, 2019 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1676829☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt’s no mitzvah to be offended, but neither is it a mitzvah to do things which you know people find offensive.
February 10, 2019 1:20 pm at 1:20 pm #16768371ParticipantI am thinking of doing just because of the liberal grandstanders
February 10, 2019 1:56 pm at 1:56 pm #1676841MammeleParticipantBlackface at this point is the opposite of what we Yidden should be doing in Gulas. Offensive costumes against us notwithstanding, the reason for all the uproar lately is not just because it looks offensive, but because of its racist history. And in the current political climate, feigning ignorance won’t work.
Why the need to “reitz” with the ”felker” for a silly costume? Don’t we get enough hatred from them as is?
February 10, 2019 1:56 pm at 1:56 pm #1676855👑RebYidd23ParticipantIt really isn’t that hard not to wear blackface, and offending people on purpose is simply a bad thing to do.
February 10, 2019 3:35 pm at 3:35 pm #16769301ParticipantHow often has playing nice worked out well for the Jews? We wouldn’t have a state of Israel, if we played nice.
February 10, 2019 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #1676947GadolhadorahParticipantI plan to dress up as Joseph for Purim…..any thoughts on what such a costume would look like would be greatly appreciated
February 10, 2019 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #1676980JosephParticipantHadorah: A long white beard, a nice kapote and a big Homburg hat.
February 10, 2019 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #1676960👑RebYidd23Participant1, if you really don’t know the difference between being assertive and being mean, I don’t think anyone on this forum can teach you.
Also, rather than “playing nice”, how about being nice?
February 10, 2019 5:36 pm at 5:36 pm #1676981writerParticipantA keyboard
February 10, 2019 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #1677022sifsei chachamimParticipantWe shouldn’t wear blackface because it’s insensitive. When Dov Hikind wore blackface a few years ago it caused a big chillul hashem. We should show other the same sensitivity we would like that they show us (even if they don’t). You have to be a Mentch because you’re a yid not because we’re in galus.
February 10, 2019 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm #1677045knaidlachParticipantmake your face black. goyim will think you are really black.
February 10, 2019 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #1677062DovidBTParticipantmake your face black. goyim will think you are really black.
Not if you do it properly. Search for publicity posters of the 1927 movie, “The Jazz Singer”.
February 10, 2019 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #1677067👑RebYidd23ParticipantKnaidlach, how does that help?
February 10, 2019 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm #1677135Neville ChaimBerlinParticipant“It really isn’t that hard not to wear blackface”
Actually, it’s really hard not to. I have to force myself to get out of bed every day knowing that I won’t be able to wear the blackface that makes me feel so pretty. You just wouldn’t understand.
February 11, 2019 12:02 am at 12:02 am #1677156👑RebYidd23ParticipantSorry, Rachel, but I think that might just be your personal problem.
February 11, 2019 12:19 am at 12:19 am #1677158Neville ChaimBerlinParticipantWell, we still don’t know if the Governor of Virginia was the one in blackface or the one in the klan costume. So, if a person wants to dress as him for Purim, they can just wear a klan costume. Then, they’ll have a 50% chance of portraying the right guy, and nobody’s offended! It’s a win-win!
February 11, 2019 1:46 am at 1:46 am #1677171MammeleParticipantDon’t worry Rachel, you’re not alone. Beth feels your pain… And she may be your future president.
Now orange is in, red may be next, and then your lucky day may come. The times they are a changin’…
A freilichen Adar everyone!
February 11, 2019 8:10 am at 8:10 am #1677234GadolhadorahParticipantWhen some parents allowed their kids to dress in concentration camp uniforms mocking the kadoshim from the shoah, there was near-universal horror and condemnation. While the two issues are not comparable, its important to remember that each ethnic group has its own visuals that evoke pain and emotional distress. There is a big difference between being politically incorrect in a humorous, satirical way and and outright and deliberate provocation where you know the painful consequences. If you cannot decipher that line, then go back and learn why.
February 11, 2019 9:38 am at 9:38 am #1677278Neville ChaimBerlinParticipant“If you cannot decipher that line, then go back and learn why.”
OK, but can I at least wear blackface while I’m learning? It helps.February 11, 2019 10:44 am at 10:44 am #1677336GadolhadorahParticipantTo “1”. Actually, you degrade yourself and are insulting and disparaging “all people” when you make a fool of yourself and dress up in racially derogatory lvush or makeup. But go ahead since such self-humiliation seems to give you great nachas.
February 11, 2019 10:46 am at 10:46 am #1677349Neville ChaimBerlinParticipantYeah! I don’t see anyone getting upset about them going whiteface!
February 11, 2019 11:45 am at 11:45 am #1677390DovidBTParticipantWhy do we have to cave to black people, at every turn? I think it’s more a case of caving to white leftists, who are using the issue in their thought-control compaign.
Would a Kim Jong-un costume be offensive? What about François “Papa Doc” Duvalier?
February 11, 2019 11:45 am at 11:45 am #1677398zahavasdadParticipantWhatever happend to the good old days where everyone dressed up as Morderchai, Esther, Achasveroah or Haman
February 11, 2019 11:48 am at 11:48 am #16774071ParticipantGH everything is insulting these days.
February 11, 2019 1:00 pm at 1:00 pm #1677421GadolhadorahParticipantDovid….if you are unable to make the distinctions in you question then no reason to respond further. Think of it in terms of whether dressing your kids for purim in a costume that ridiculed the appearence of a chashuvah rav whose skin pigmentation is very white because of a disease. or the lvush of a particular chassidus that dressed in very unusual ways.. If you think thats appropriate than nothing else to say.
February 11, 2019 1:01 pm at 1:01 pm #1677433Neville ChaimBerlinParticipantGadol: please consult your local orthodox calendar.
February 11, 2019 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm #1677488GadolhadorahParticipantNeville”: I did……and today is definitely NOT the yahrtzeit of Avram Yoelson ben Moshe Reuven Yoelson and Nechama Yoelson (aka Al Jolson).
February 11, 2019 5:29 pm at 5:29 pm #1677870👑RebYidd23ParticipantWhat does showing basic respect even have to do with politics?
February 11, 2019 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #1677877GadolhadorahParticipantReb Yid: U’mein VaU’mein. Iits just that some of our resident trolls get off on trying to emulate certain vulgar, politically incorrect (and occasionally blatantly racist) political leaders on both ends of the political spectrum.
February 11, 2019 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #1677896Ben LParticipantPart of Hatzneh Leshes is not drawing overt attention to oneself.
While I may disagree strongly with the use of :”blackface” as a measuring stick for racism I do not think that there is even the slightest disagreement that wearing blackface in the current climate is ithe opposite of the principle of hatzneh leches.
In addition we are in golus, v’hameivin yuvin.February 11, 2019 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #1677908Neville ChaimBerlinParticipant“What does showing basic respect even have to do with politics?”
Exactly! All I want to do is honor and show my respect for the African American community by putting on black face to show I can relate to their struggles. But, naturally, the oppressive leftist won’t let me do that.
February 11, 2019 11:54 pm at 11:54 pm #1677968👑RebYidd23ParticipantNeville, what changed your motive?
February 14, 2019 1:31 am at 1:31 am #1679453Neville ChaimBerlinParticipantMy motive for using blackface on Purim is the same as any other year. I do it the way I learned from my father. The way he learned from his father. The way HE learned from HIS father. And so on.
February 14, 2019 9:40 am at 9:40 am #1679562👑RebYidd23ParticipantThat’s three so far, each one presented separately from the others.
February 14, 2019 11:09 am at 11:09 am #1679665Neville ChaimBerlinParticipantThree generations of blackface, three purim’s, or three black faces?
February 14, 2019 11:53 am at 11:53 am #1679645GadolhadorahParticipantNeville: Really special that your zeydeh and elter zeydeh etc. came from Africa where they developed the minhag of putting on blackface on Purim to show kovod to their neighbors rather than having come from the Alte Heim where presumably there were few Blacks to emulate on Purim.
February 14, 2019 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm #1679764Neville ChaimBerlinParticipant“Really special that your zeydeh and elter zeydeh etc. came from Africa ”
Thank you. They faced a lot of adversity as a result of it. Luckily, the NAACP had their backs.February 14, 2019 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #1679732GadolhadorahParticipantNeville: If you ancestors came over on the Mayflower and settled in Crown Heights in the early 1700s, than you probably have a sound basis for your purim minhag and I’m certain its done with only the most noble and respectful intent, especially in those years when Purim comes reasonably close to Black History Month.
February 15, 2019 1:25 am at 1:25 am #1680102HaimyParticipantThere are Blacks punching out frum Yidden in crown Heights, do we need to add fuel to the fire? Let’s use common sense & avoid antagonizing ainom Yehudim.
February 15, 2019 7:52 am at 7:52 am #1680142truth2powerParticipantI am a black Jew.
I am so incredibly distressed, hurt and ashamed to have read this appalling thread.
How can anyone think this is a way an ‘am kodosh’ behaves, thinks or speaks?
Open your eyes.February 15, 2019 8:41 am at 8:41 am #1680154🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantThere is one poster who thinks its funny to be offensive and everyone else disagreeing with him. What part of that is distressing?
February 15, 2019 8:41 am at 8:41 am #1680155ubiquitinParticipantHaimy
“There are Blacks punching out frum Yidden in crown Heights, do we need to add fuel to the fire? Let’s use common sense & avoid antagonizing ainom Yehudim.”
and if there was no punching, antagonizing people would be ok?
February 15, 2019 11:49 am at 11:49 am #1680240HaimyParticipantNo it wouldn’t be ok, but KAL vechomer if they are attacking us physically.
February 15, 2019 11:52 am at 11:52 am #1680252GadolhadorahParticipantTo MKYLB: Sorry you have to deal with this but we have some really dumb resident trolls who constantly seek new threads or opportunities to assert that its “OK” to disparage, mock or disrespect women, blacks, Hispanics, muslims or whatever rant they think will get a rise from other CR readers. Responding generally energizes them to amp up their rants or start a new one. Its not just a question of being “politically incorrect” on controversial public policy issues since that would require invoking verifiable information or objective facts to support a position. That’s too much work for a troll not really interested in civil discourse. Instead, just make some moronic comment about other groups and move on. .
February 15, 2019 12:33 pm at 12:33 pm #1680259HuhhhParticipant@gadolhadorah i couldn’t stop laughing at your comment. about 90 percent of the people who access this website probably consider you a really dumb resident troll (and technically you ARE anti-black…hat)
February 15, 2019 12:39 pm at 12:39 pm #1680263frumnotyeshivishParticipantI vote to ban the Mishe-Mishe song too. Blaring the tune of “pick a bale of cotton” on Purim is idiotic.
