The IDF has inspected 50 US-built F16i fighter jets and to date, results of 20 have been received. The findings indicated formaldehyde, a cancerous substance, was found in 3 of the 20.
A number of weeks ago, Air Force Commander Major-General Eliezer Shkedy grounded all F16i, stating they will only be used for operational missions, until such time all the cockpits are inspected following reports of the cancerous material.
American and Israeli experts are working in concert to ascertain the source of the problematic substance as well as finding an acceptable solution that will permit placing all the fighter jets back in service.
