Chabad Joins Search For Missing Israeli Hiker In New Zealand

chopper.jpgTwo rabbis have joined a police search for Israeli tourist Liat Okin, 35, who has been missing for more than two weeks after setting off alone on a three-day hike in New Zealand’s South Island, a Chabad Web site reports.

Rabbi Menachem Goldstein, New Zealand director of Chabad, and his assistant, Rabbi Oren Raz, have flown from their base to Queenstown to assist in the search.

Local police have said they do not suspect Okin has been a victim of foul play but she had little food with her when last seen on March 26 as she set off to walk the 35-kilometer Routeburn Track.

She was reported missing after she failed to contact family members a week later and police said her passport, money and belongings were still at a friend’s house in Queenstown.

Specialist rescue volunteers joined the hunt on Friday after a helicopter and ground search found no trace of her the previous day.
