Eida Gavaad: Performance of Mitzvos at Times Demands Mesirus Nefesh

gavadAttending sheva brachos for a great grandchild, Gavaad Eida Chareidis HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss Shlita addressed the “gezeiros” facing the Torah community from the new government. The rav stated that the situation demands mesirus nefesh.

The rav stated that in general, we must be willing to exert mesirus nefesh in the fulfillment of mitzvos; speaking about bris milah and that even metzitzah b’peh is threatened today. The Gavaad said that regarding metzitzah b’peh, here too mesirus nefesh is required.

The rav pointed out just how alarming the situation is, citing a rav in Germany was arrested after performing a bris on his son in which metzitzah b’peh was performed.

  1. Oy, RBS”O. Ad mosai? The worst gezeiros come from anti-semites who are Jewish. Whether their names are Bloomberg, Bennett or Lapid.

  2. To WhiteBear (NO 2)…

We rely on YWN for objective news on issues of concern. There are many articles clearly labled as editorial in nature where the views of the editors/guest writers are clearly labeled as such. For a story such as this, where a well known rav who frequently engages in hyperoble on all matters related to the medinah, it was correct for the editors to put quotes around a term which many others in the frum community view as a lawful action by a democratically elected government, even if opposed by factions of the Chareidi kehillah.

  3. quotation marks if used for other than quote suggest doubt. Since the word is non-English, perhaps italics would be better to show it isn’t exactly an English word. It sort of means “decree” but such translations are soft and have to be seen in context. “mesiras nefesh” is also a problem to translate as well as being a euphemism since depending on context it can mean allowing yourself to be killed to avoid doing an averiah, or just making great efforts, or taking affirmative steps to oppose those who demand that you do an averiah.
